For clinic owners
Med spa membership and loyalty ideas
Memberships convert an unpredictable calendar into recurring revenue, but only when entitlements are tracked properly. Most membership programmes fail on operations — unclear entitlements, unenforced expiry and reconciliation at month end — rather than on concept.
Structures that tend to work
A monthly treatment tier with a fixed service included; a credit tier where a monthly amount accrues toward any service; and a maintenance tier for patients on a longer interval who mainly want priority access and a review appointment.
Keep tiers few and legible. Three tiers a receptionist can explain in one sentence beat six that nobody can.
Design entitlements you can enforce
Every entitlement needs a rule: what is included, how often, whether it rolls over, when it expires and whether it transfers. Ambiguity gets resolved at the desk in the patient's favour, which is where margin leaks.
Decide how memberships interact with packages
Set the order of application at checkout: membership discount, then package session, then retail credit — or whatever fits your pricing. Configure it once so it is applied identically by every staff member.
Loyalty without discount spirals
Priority booking, complimentary review appointments, early access to schedule releases and a birthday retail credit reward loyalty without cutting treatment prices. Never reward volume of clinical treatment as such — frequency must follow clinical assessment.
Watch the numbers that predict churn
Track utilisation per tier, twelve-month survival, revenue per member per month and the proportion of members with unused entitlements. Under-use is the leading indicator of cancellation.
Checklist to take with you
- Three or fewer tiers, explainable in one sentence
- Written entitlement rules: inclusion, frequency, rollover, expiry, transfer
- Checkout order of application configured centrally
- Loyalty rewards that avoid incentivising treatment frequency
- Utilisation and survival reported monthly
- Clear cancellation and pause terms
Common questions
- Should unused entitlements roll over?
- A limited rollover — one cycle, capped — reduces cancellations without creating an unbounded liability. Whatever you choose, write it into the terms.
- Can loyalty points be earned on injectable treatments?
- Incentivising the frequency of prescription treatments is restricted or prohibited in several jurisdictions. Check local rules and prefer rewards tied to non-clinical benefits.
- How do we stop members under-using their plan?
- Flag two consecutive unused cycles and prompt a personal check-in. It is far cheaper than winning the member back after cancellation.
Run this on one record
